Three Years After Dobbs Decision, Kean Jr. is Pushing “Backdoor” Abortion Ban in GOP Budget

On the three year anniversary of the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade, here’s a reminder that anti-choice extremist Tom Kean Jr. is still working to erode abortion rights in New Jersey.

Kean Jr. rubberstamped a provision buried in the GOP Tax Scam that would block Affordable Care Act (ACA) funds from going to any state health plans that cover abortion services — forcing states like New Jersey to choose between protecting access to abortion or putting millions at risk of losing their health care.

Read more about Kean Jr.’s “backdoor nationwide abortion ban” from NJ Spotlight News:

  • If the budget reconciliation package currently before the U.S. Senate becomes law, a provision to cut federal funding to Planned Parenthood could serve as a “backdoor” nationwide abortion ban, according to providers and advocates, and potentially eliminate access to one in four abortion providers across the country.
  • Kaitlyn Wojtowicz, executive director of the Planned Parenthood Action Fund of New Jersey, said the consequences of the legislation would not only be devastating, they would take effect immediately. “As soon as the bill passes within a couple weeks, Planned Parenthood will no longer be able to participate in the Medicaid program,” she said. “It would be pretty catastrophic for access to reproductive health care.”
