This Thursday, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump will come to Capitol Hill for meetings with Speaker Paul Ryan, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and other Republican Senate and House Members. In order to move past the denial stage, and come to grips with the damaging reality of running on a Trump Ticket, will John Katko meet with Donald Trump so that he can ‘earn his vote’?
After Donald Trump won the Republican nomination last Tuesday, Katko said: “Any candidate has to earn my vote, including Donald Trump.” Katko previously said he would “back whoever the Republican nominee is.”
What does that even mean? When will the inflexible, stubborn and unpredictable Trump “earn” their vote? Is it when he says that women should not be punished for abortions? Is it when Donald Trump admits that it would be dangerous and reckless to break apart our alliance with NATO?
Clearly, Katko has a lot of questions for Donald Trump, given that they will share the Trump Ticket in November.
“With Donald Trump visiting Capitol Hill this week, House Republicans are waking up from a bad dream, only to find that it’s reality. No matter how evasive, vague and downright confusing House Republicans are in their reaction to Trump securing the nomination, the Trump Ticket is real, and it is damaging. Given Katko’s so-called declaration that Trump must “earn” his vote, he must want to sit down to start ironing out all those kinks on their Trump Ticket,” said Bryan Lesswing at the DCCC.
