The clock is ticking on Fred Upton’s retirement announcement as Upton comes face to face with Michigan voters tired of waiting to hear if he’ll retire now or wait until voters kick him out of office this November.
For months, Michiganders have questioned Fred Upton’s clear transformation into a stalwart member of the Washington Republican establishment while he votes the party-line on issues that matter to them, like opposing lowering the cost of prescription drugs.
As these concessions pile up, Upton continues to refuse to announce his retirement plans, blowing past self-created deadlines and dodging questions on the subject.
But with the 2020 election approaching and Michiganders eager to hold Upton accountable, time is running out.
“With Upton spending the week in Michigan, he’s placed himself squarely in a situation he’s avoided for a long time: facing voters he sold out for a fancy dinner with Washington elite,” said DCCC spokesperson Sarah Guggenheimer. “For months, Upton has pushed off any announcement about his future. But as he faces a frosty reception in Michigan, it begs the question if this will finally be what pushes Upton to call it quits.”
