Denham Has A Record Of Anti-Immigrant Rhetoric, Helped Trump Build His DC Luxury Hotel
Vulnerable Congressman Jeff Denham’s horse, Jeb Bush, is out of the race for the GOP Presidential nomination, leaving Denham to pick between the leftover extreme candidates. Will Denham’s friendship with the clear GOP frontrunner Donald Trump guide his choice?
In typical DC insider fashion, Denham touted how much he helped The Donald turn the historic 1890s-era Old Post Office building in downtown DC into the luxury Trump International Hotel. That’s the same hotel where protesters rallied last summer after Trump characterized Mexican immigrants as drug dealers, criminals, and rapists.
Perhaps Denham is so supportive of Trump because he, too, he said that “anyone who is here right now as an illegal immigrant should be detained, arrested, and deported,” opposed the federal DREAM Act, and supported Arizona’s radical anti-immigrant law.
Denham must explain his friendship and ideological alignment with Trump to the people in his competitive Central Valley district, where more than 42 percent of residents are Latino. Even if Denham keeps mum out of fear of political backlash, he’ll still have to explain why he put so much effort into a construction project with a reality show star in DC instead of helping the Central Valley climb out of the greatest recession since the Great Depression.
“Jeff Denham’s first choice for president Jeb Bush is out, leaving him free to line up behind his friend Donald Trump. If Denham does, he’ll have to explain to his 42 percent Latino district why he’d support someone who has unapologetically called Mexican immigrants drug dealers, criminals, and rapists,” said Barb Solish of the DCCC. “Even if Denham won’t pick between the leftover extreme candidates, he still needs to explain his own intolerant rhetoric and why he’s so proud of what he called a job creating project in DC instead of fighting for jobs in the Central Valley.”
