Tom Barrett Doubles Down on Opposing Bipartisan Measure Which Brought 4,000 New Jobs to Michigan

Lansing City Pulse Column: “Barrett is taking a huge political gamble” opposing 4,000 new manufacturing jobs, new battery factory in Lansing

Mid-Michiganders scored a huge win this week as General Motors announced it was investing $7 billion to create 4,000 new jobs and retain 1,000 jobs, many of which are in the Lansing area. In addition to the new jobs, this bipartisan effort will be a boon for MI-07: GM’s new planned battery factory in Delta Township is expected to be a job multiplier for the local economy.

But if Tom Barrett had his way, these game-changing investments in job growth would’ve never happened – and Michiganders have taken note. MIRS reported this week that Barrett “doubled down” on opposing bipartisan measures to attract new manufacturing plants and good-paying jobs to Mid-Michigan.

The Lansing City Pulse writes that by turning his back on MI-07,  “Barrett is taking a huge political gamble,” especially as he runs for Congress “in the one part of Michigan that is apparently going to benefit from this investment the most.”

“When Tom Barrett had the chance to work with Republicans and Democrats to bring new manufacturing facilities and at least 4,000 new jobs to Michigan, he voted to block the deal that would bring $2.6 billion in investment to the Greater Lansing area. Now he’s shamefully doubling down on his toxic brand of partisan politics over working together to create jobs in Michigan,” said DCCC spokesperson Elena Kuhn. “Mid-Michigan voters won’t soon forget that if Barrett had his way, MI-07 would’ve lost out on economic growth and thousands of new jobs.”
