Tom Barrett Shares Blame For January 6

Tom Barrett willfully spread the “Big Lie” and tried to stop Michiganders’ voices from being heard two days before January 6

On January 6, 2021, a violent far-right mob incited by former President Trump and House Republicans’ “Big Lie” stormed our Capitol in an attempt to overturn a free and fair American election. This violent insurrection resulted in the death of 5 people and injured 140 officers. Tom Barrett has been unusually quiet on the one-year anniversary of that mob. Maybe it’s because he knows he shares the blame for it.

As the Detroit News reminded readers this morning, just two days before the deadly insurrection, Tom Barrett participated in an “unsuccessful push” to delay certifying the results of the election. Even after the Michigan Supreme Court had already ruled against examining the nonexistent election fraud, Barrett and his colleagues sought to prolong the “Big Lie” and peddle baseless conspiracies undermining our democracy.

The Barrett-endorsed scheme to silence hundreds of thousands of Michiganders’ votes sought to “pursue every available option” to examine unproven claims of wrongdoing and “temporarily delay certification,” sowing doubt in a free and fair election.

“Tom Barrett’s willingness to endorse lies and conspiracy theories in an effort to undermine the integrity of the American electorate is disqualifying and dangerous. Tom Barrett had his hand in the ‘Big Lie’ bucket, and his role in encouraging the blatant lies that led to the January 6th attack cannot be forgotten.”
