Tom Barrett’s Record of Standing with Corporate Interests Over Families Would Be a Disaster for Michigan

Tom Barrett just announced he’s running for Congress, but already his disqualifying record makes clear that he’d be a disaster for Michigan families. Barrett is an ideologue who’s proven he’s more interested in bolstering his extreme partisan credentials than in being an independently minded voice for Michigan — and already working families have paid the price.

Barrett voted to ban local minimum wage increases, opposed prevailing wage requirements to ensure workers are paid fairly for what they’ve earned, and voted to increase the price of gas — hitting Michiganders’ pocketbooks in the face of record-breaking inflation.

Even worse, Barrett’s record shows he’ll happily sell out Michigan families for his corporate backers. His political career is bankrolled by special interests — and with an out-of-touch record like his, his funders appear to have gotten a good return on their investment.

“Tom Barrett’s record represents the worst of partisan politics,” said DCCC spokesperson Elena Kuhn. “Instead of coming together and working to find common-sense solutions for Michigan, time and again Barrett chose to bolster his partisan credentials and stand up for his special interest backers while hard-working families paid the price. From opposing fair wages for union workers to supporting measures which would increase the price of gas, Barrett’s partisanship and disastrous record make clear he’s wrong for Michigan.”
