Kean Jr.’s secret provision advances a backdoor effort to pressure states with established legal protections into gradually stripping away abortion rights. It’s part of a larger effort by anti-choice Republicans like Kean Jr. to chip away at abortion access nationwide — piece by piece, bill by bill.

Reminder: Kean Jr. has a long record of attacking a woman’s right to choose. Before the Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade, Kean Jr. promised he would fight “every step of the way to protect the unborn from egregious abortion laws.” And when given the opportunity to codify Roe v. Wade nationwide, he sided with anti-abortion politicians who believe they should control women’s reproductive health care decisions.
