Tony Gonzales Ducks and Dodges Reporter Questions About Health Care in TX-23

Gonzales, who represents one of the most uninsured districts in the countryghosts local press on Medicaid expansion

Texans who live in TX-23 may be wondering what, if anything, Republican Tony Gonzales will do to lower the cost of their health care — but it seems they won’t be getting an answer any time soon. This week, Tony was caught ducking and dodging reporter questions about if he supports a bill that could expand affordable health care to two million Texans, despite representing one of the most uninsured districts in the country.

Texas has the highest share of uninsured residents of any state in the nation. After Texas Republicans again refused to expand Medicaid during the legislative session, Democratic members of Congress introduced a new bill to “help many struggling to see a doctor and get the care they need.”

When local San Antonio TV station FOX 29 reached out to Republican lawmakers for comment — “including Congressmen Chip Roy and Tony Gonzales” — they “weren’t available or said we’d hear from them Tuesday.”

“Texans deserve better than Tony Gonzales, whose defining act as Congressman was voting against relief for businesses and families trying to survive the pandemic,” saidDCCC spokesperson Monica Robinson. “Now he’s dodging questions about making health care more affordable.  It’s clear that Tony is hiding from journalists because he knows voting against aid for small businesses and opposing expanding access to health care hurts his district.”
