Tony Gonzales Slammed in Hometown Paper for Flip-Flop on January 6 Capitol Attack

San Antonio Express-News editorial board member: “History will not look kindly upon betting big on the Big Lie and minimizing the insurrection”

Tony Gonzales (TX-23) is one of the Republican lawmakers who “placed their party’s agenda ahead of their oath to ‘support and defend the Constitution’” — and now, he’s being called out in his hometown paper, the San Antonio Express-News.

In May, Tony Gonzales was one of a handful of Republicans who voted to create an independent commission to investigate the deadly attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6th. But his charade didn’t last for long — just weeks later, he flip-flopped and voted to stop a bipartisan committee from uncovering the truth about how the violent attack on our democracy happened.

Two-Faced Tony joined House Republicans who “placed their party’s agenda ahead of their oath.” His hometown newspaper asks: “What changed?”

San Antonio Express-News: Lingle: Vets in House loyal to a lie, not to their oath
August 13, 2021

  • “Jan. 6 was one of the darkest days for our nation. A despicable day that history will view with shame. But the alternate history insurrection apologists are peddling might be more frightening.”

  • “Rather than calling it what it was — an insurrection — and supporting a bipartisan commission to fully investigate, most Republican lawmakers have downplayed Jan. 6, looking away from how President Donald Trump’s rhetoric and actions incited the attack.”

  • “Yet instead of uniting to find the ground truth of the tumultuous period between Nov. 3 and Jan. 6, Republicans have doubled down on the Big Lie about massive voter fraud while also whitewashing the narrative of the deadly riot at the U.S. Capitol.”

  • “It’s particularly troubling most Republican lawmakers who are military veterans have placed their party’s agenda ahead of their oath to ‘support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.’”

  • “In the immediate aftermath of Jan. 6, many — myself included — thought we would see an effort akin to the 9/11 Commission. Instead, we slid into a mess of obstructionism and obfuscation that has hobbled members of Congress in reaching consensus on how to investigate an attack that directly targeted them.”

  • “Texas’ nine Republican representatives who are veterans haven’t […] fully supported Congress’ efforts to investigate the attack.”

  • “Navy vet Tony Gonzales, who represents Texas’ sprawling 23rd Congressional District […] initially broke ranks from their party to support the bipartisan committee but later back-pedaled and voted against the House select committee. What changed?”

  • “History will not look kindly upon betting big on the Big Lie and minimizing the insurrection.”

  • “Kinzinger remembered his oath to the Constitution and is working to find common ground. Too bad he is the only one.”
