As the GOP officially makes Indiana Governor Mike Pence their pick for Vice President tonight in Cleveland, they are making crystal clear their conservative and out of touch agenda for America. As if Donald Trump’s nearly daily offensive comments were not enough, now John Mica has a new crop of positions and comments to defend with Pence on the ticket. Mica already agrees with Pence on the following positions:
- Birthright citizenship: John Mica agrees with Pence (and Steve King – yes, that Steve King) that we should end birthright citizenship
- LGBT rights: John Mica agrees with Pence in his abject opposition to basic civil rights for LGBT Americans
- Immigration reform: John Mica agrees with Pence that there should be no immigration reform
- Social Security: John Mica agrees with Pence that we should privatize Social Security.
- Minimum Wage: Mica and Pence oppose raising the minimum wage.
Does Mica agree with Pence on the following?
- Planned Parenthood: Pence thinks that it was a good thing to shut down the government to defund Planned Parenthood.
- Choice: Pence thinks that Roe v. Wade should be overturned.
- Climate Change: Does John Mica agree with Pence when he said “global warming is a myth?”
Clearly Pence is out of touch with the people in Central Florida.
- Will John Mica invite Pence to Florida’s 10th Congressional District?
- Will John Mica campaign with Pence?
“Just when you thought Trump’s presidential campaign couldn’t get any more extreme, Trump named Mike Pence as his running mate,” said Jermaine House of the DCCC. “John Mica’s GOP has become not only an embarrassment, but a dangerous, bigoted, and out of touch vision for America.”
BACKGROUND
Mike Pence On Whether He Was To Risk A Government Shutdown Over Defunding Planned Parenthood: “Of Course I Am.” GEIST: “Are you willing to hold up this entire budget over defunding Planned Parenthood?” PENCE: “Of course I am. I think the American people have begun to learn that the largest abortion provider in the country is also the largest recipient of federal funding under Title X and they want to see that come to an end.” [Morning Joe, MSNBC, 4/5/11]
March 2002: Mike Pence Spoke In Favor Of Personal Accounts For Social Security, Calling Them “Completely Safe.” [Page H725, Congressional Record, 3/6/02]
Mike Pence: “I Long For The Day That Roe V. Wade Is Sent To The Ash Heap Of History.” “I long for the day that Roe v. Wade is sent to the ash heap of history, when we move past the broken hearts and broken lives of the past 38 years, but as this debate rages on…let us at least respect the overwhelming consensus of the American people and end taxpayer support for abortion providers once and for all.” [Mike Pence House Floor Statement, 2/17/11]
Mike Pence Said That A Bill That Would Raise The Federal Minimum Wage To $7.25 Was “One Of The Most Anti-Minority And Anti-Poor Laws That We Could Bring Into This Congress.” “An excessive increase in the minimum wage will hurt the working poor… I believe the minimum wage and this increase is one of the most anti-minority, anti-poor laws that we could bring into this Congress.” [Congressional Record, 1/10/07]
Pence Voted Against Bill To Raise The Minimum Wage. [HR 2, Vote 18, 1/10/07]
Mike Pence Signed A Bill Prohibiting Local Governments From Raising The Minimum Wage Or Providing Paid Sick Leave Beyond State Or Federal Mandates. “Republican representatives, including several who said they own businesses that pay the minimum wage, insisted a hike in employee wages would inevitably lead to layoffs as business owners properly protect their profits. The underlying legislation, which was signed into law by Republican Gov. Mike Pence and took effect July 1, prohibits local governments from requiring businesses pay a higher minimum wage, or offer any working condition or benefit, such as paid sick leave, if it’s not mandated by state or federal law.” [Times of Northwest Indiana, 11/12/13]
Mike Pence: “The American People Don’t Want Comprehensive Immigration Reform.” TODD: “In this instance though the Senate did. There’s no doubt there’s a lot of dysfunction, but they actually produced a bill.” PENCE: “The American people don’t want comprehensive immigration reform, and the Senate adopted that approach. But, I truly do believe that the Congress ought to take on this issue in a positive and a constructive way, because I think there is broad consensus about how we can deal with this issue. If we begin with border security and upholding the rule of law – there’s a broad range of areas where we can begin to address this issue. You know it was a half dozen years ago that I proposed a no-amnesty guest worker program with the senior Senator from Texas, and I still believe that’s an idea whose time will come.” [Meet the Press, NBC News, 11/19/14]

Mike Pence Said ENDA “Wages War On Freedom Of Religion In The Workplace.” “Pence Says Enda ‘Wages War On Freedom Of Religion In The Workplace’…U.S. Congressman Mike Pence gave the following speech on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives today opposing the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, a bill that would harm the free practice of religion in the United States.” [Press Release, Office of Rep. Pence, 11/7/07; Wayback Machine, accessed 7/20/16]
Mike Pence In 2000: “Global Warming Is A Myth.” “Global warming is a myth. The global warming treaty is a disaster. There, I said it. Just like the ‘new ice age’ scare of the 1970’s, the environmental movement has found a new chant for their latest ‘chicken little’ attempt to raise taxes and grow centralized governmental power. The chant is ‘the sky is warming! the sky is warming!’. The only problem is that many Americans, including Vice President Al Gore, didn’t learn of their deceit the last time around and are buying this new bit hook, line and sinker.” [Mike Pence, Campaign Website, 2000; Wayback Machine, accessed 7/20/16]
