It was a rough morning for Carlos Curbelo on ABC’s This Week in South Florida.
- First, Republican Ed MacDougall highlighted how Curbelo is hiding his lobbying clients by listing his lobbying company in his wife’s name, asking “who are his clients,” and “why is this not coming out.”
- Then, local political commentator Elaine de Valle of Political Cortadito slammed Curbelo for refusing to answer questions about his lobbying firm and Curbelo’s potential conflicts of interest on the School Board, stating “we don’t know how many of his clients are doing business with the school board” and it appears Curbelo “is trying to keep who his clients are from the public.”
The Miami New Times previously reported that Curbelo “has a history of approving contracts for campaign donors” on the School Board, funneling millions of tax dollars meant for schools, children and teachers to his political cronies.

Carlos has Capital Gains, that’s a company that he put in his wife’s name, right before his election he was advised to do that, to the School Board. He’s made $250,000 in the last two years through Capital Gains. Who are his clients? He regulates hundreds of millions, billions, of dollars through the school board. He’s a lobbyist. Why is this not coming out?
If it [the lobbying business] were in his name, he would be required by law as a school board member to disclose who his clients are. We don’t know how many of his clients are doing business with the school board… looks like to me somebody who is, yes, I am cynical and I look at elected officials maybe with a different eye – that he is trying to keep who his clients are from the public. And why would he do that?
