For the second election cycle in a row Congressman Erik Paulsen is trying to distance himself from Donald Trump. In 2016, Trump was a controversial candidate for president. In 2018, he’s a controversial President Trump.
In his first TV ad of the 2018 campaign, Paulsen highlights a key issue where he opposed the president and many other Republicans.

“I’ll stand up to my party or President Trump to protect Minnesota,” Paulsen goes on to say in the ad. However, he doesn’t give any other examples. It might be because there are not many to choose from.
According to the FiveThirtyEight website’s congressional vote tracking, Paulsen has voted 97.7 percent in favor of bills also supported by Trump. That’s higher than either of his Republican colleagues in the Minnesota Congressional delegation. Lewis votes 90.5 percent of the time with the president and Emmer votes that way 88.2 percent.
