Vulnerable House Republicans Fail to Grow a Spine, Join Deputy Speaker and Donald Trump In Raising Costs

Last night was bad for Donald Trump and Mike Johnson, but REALLY bad for vulnerable GOP incumbents

Last night, nearly every single vulnerable House Republican representing a seat the DCCC is targeting voted to continue Donald Trump’s  cost-raising tariffs. Thanks to the work of House Democrats – they still lost.

While we agree with last night’s coverage that the failed vote was a major loss for Donald Trump and his Deputy Speaker Mike Johnson, this was an epic miscalculation by vulnerable House Republicans.

Every vulnerable Republican will now be forced to go on record in defending Trump’s tariffs, starting first with Canada this evening.

This is a lose-lose situation for the vulnerable House Republicans.

  • Go against the President and Deputy Speaker and face the threat of retribution;
  • Go with the President and endorse the politically toxic position of being pro-price hike.

Just this week, the Tax Foundation found Trump’s tariffs cost the average American household $1,000 last year. The cost is expected to rise in 2026 to $1,300 if existing tariffs that House Republicans voted on today stay in place.

DCCC Spokesperson Justin Chermol:
“Vulnerable House Republicans have concluded the best political calculus is to raise costs on their constituents because they’re too scared to break from Donald Trump and Deputy Speaker Mike Johnson. How cowardly.”
