At the command of Donald Trump, vulnerable House Republicans and Mike Johnson are setting the stage for a Shakespearean level drama as they prepare to deny the results of the 2024 election by pushing legislation that amplifies conspiracy theories.
ACT I: Speaker Johnson rolls out election denial legislation with Donald Trump in Mar-a-Lago, who is under federal investigation for inciting an insurrection on the U.S. Capitol to interrupt counting the results of the 2020 election.
ACT II: Speaker Johnson invites some of the most prominent and notorious election deniers to DC to espouse lies about election security and push their anti-democracy agenda on the same steps where rioters attacked the Capitol on January 6th, 2021. During the press conference, Speaker Johnson concedes that he had no evidence to support his claim that there is a “clear and present danger to the integrity of our election system”:
“We all know, intuitively, that a lot of illegals are voting in federal elections, but it’s not been something that is easily provable. … We don’t have that number.”
ACT III: Johnson and vulnerable House Republicans plot to pass bills to ban non-citizen voting – something that is already illegal in federal elections and there is no evidence that this occurs broadly, as has been pointed out by thinktanks across the political spectrum.
EPILOGUE: House Republicans, after spending the entire election propagating fringe conspiracy theories about the safety of our election system to appease Donald Trump, challenge the election results when they don’t win… just like Mike Johnson did in 2020.
