Peter Meijer is in the race of his life this cycle – and his chances of hanging on just got tougher as a Democratic challenger just jumped in the race.
The political headwinds are already against Meijer, as he faces a competitive primary from far-right, Trump-endorsed challenger John Gibbs and after Michigan redistricting undid the partisan gerrymandering of the district and MI-03 swung 11 percentage points toward Democrats.
Now, as a Democrat enters the race, Meijer will have to answer for his toxic record of:
-
Voting against the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which is bringing critical funding to help Michigan fix crumbling roads and bridges, protect drinking water, ease supply chain pressures, and create jobs in West Michigan.
-
Voting against the bipartisan select committee that is working to uncover the truth about the deadly January 6th attack on our democracy, including how it happened and how we can ensure it never happens again.
-
Voting against the Women’s Health Protection Act, which seeks to protect a woman’s freedom to make decisions regarding her own body, and joining extreme anti-choice Republicans on an amicus brief urging the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade.
-
Voting against the American Rescue Plan, which has: helped local communities tackle the pandemic by getting folks vaccinated; funded police departments, small businesses and schools; and unleashed historic economic growth.
“Peter Meijer has spent his first year in office siding with Washington party leaders to oppose infrastructure investments to protect clean water and the Great Lakes and create good-paying jobs right here in Michigan’s third Congressional district,” said DCCC spokesperson Elena Kuhn. “Now as Meijer finds himself in a district trending away from him, he’ll have to answer for his record of turning his back on West Michigan.”
