Vulnerable Republican Tony Gonzales Braces for a Bruising Primary

Republican Raul Reyes, who came within 45 votes of beating Gonzales in a primary, floats second congressional run

Rep. Tony Gonzales’s (TX-23) toxic record has made him one of the most vulnerable House Republicans in the country — and his re-election prospects may have gotten a lot slimmer as he faces the threat of another bruising primary.

Raul Reyes, who came within 45 votes of beating Tony Gonzales in their 2020 Republican primary, announced this morning that he’s gearing up for a rematch. This has to be devastating news for Tony, who already knows his record of voting against pandemic relief for working families and a middle-class tax cut is toxic in his Texas district.

Voters in Texas won’t soon forget that Two-Faced Tony hung them out to dry – and on Election Day, they’ll make sure he’s a one-term Congressman.

“If there’s one thing Texas Democrats and Texas Republicans can agree on, it’s that Tony Gonzales has been a disaster for Texas’s 23rd Congressional District,” said DCCC spokesperson Monica Robinson. “Tony’s toxic record of opposing a middle-class tax cut for Texas families and pandemic relief for small businesses has put him on notice, and his re-election prospects are more grim by the day.”
