Gonzales put on notice after voting against pandemic relief for working families, veterans, and small businesses in TX-23
Republican Tony Gonzales’s failed leadership in TX-23 has made him one of the most vulnerable members of Congress in the country – and today, he was officially put on notice when his first Democratic challenger launched their campaign.
One of Tony’s first acts as a member of Congress was to turn his back on the working families, veterans, and small businesses across Texas in desperate need of pandemic relief. House Democrats passed the American Rescue plan to throw a lifeline to Texans, put people back to work, and kickstart a pandemic-battered economy – but if Tony had had his way, the relief plan would have died with his “no” vote.
Voters in Texas won’t soon forget that Tony hung them out to dry – and he’ll have to answer for his record of misleading and abandoning his constituents from now until Election Day.
“Tony Gonzales went to DC and one of the first things he did was vote against pandemic relief for the working families and small businesses in his district,” said DCCC spokesperson Monica Robinson. “Texans deserve better than politicians like Tony who turn their back on them in a time of crisis. Tony Gonzales has been put on notice – and today is just the first of many bad news days to come for Tony as he struggles to hang on to his endangered seat and justify his record of voting against relief for South Texas.”
Tony is facing an uphill battle if he thinks Texans will forget his record of:
- Voting against the American Rescue Plan, which delivered $600 million in funding to counties that make up TX-23, provided resources to get the vaccine to Texans, sent $1,400 checks to most households, provided support for hardest-hit small businesses like restaurants and music venues, and helped get people back to work as employers got access to loans,
- Pushing to repeal the Affordable Care Act, the health care law that protects people with pre-existing conditions and provided many Texans health care during a global pandemic,
- Supporting the repeal of DACA, the program that gives children born in the United States a path to citizenship,
- Featuring a fake Border Patrol agent in a political ad – and drawing fire from the head of Customs and Border Protection for it,
- Becoming “visibly uncomfortable” when asked whether he would describe the KKK as a terrorist organization,
- Stiffing his campaign employees (and then getting sued for it).
