Vulnerable Republicans “Paint Themselves Into a Corner” After Dangerous Hypocrisy on Reproductive Freedoms

In the wake of the recent decision by the Alabama Supreme Court attacking IVF, House Republicans are running in circles to try and cover up their long history of supporting national bans on abortion and IVF.

New reporting from HuffPost excoriates Mike Johnson and dozens of his colleagues for co-sponsoring the Life at Conception Act, detailing how:

Republicans have already quietly been pushing the idea that an embryo is a child and, by extension, that destroying one is akin to murder… and now they can’t explain how they simultaneously believe that life begins at conception and also support IVF

[…]

And they are all now making public statements in strong support of IVF — despite that stance being directly contradicted by their co-sponsorship of the legislation.

Vulnerable House Republicans who have co-sponsored the bill include Reps. Michelle Steel (CA-45), Scott Perry (PA-10), David Schweikert (AZ-01), David Valadao (CA-22), Mike Garcia (CA-27), Mariannette Miller-Meeks (IA-01), and Don Bacon (NE-02) and former members Yvette Herrell (NM-02), and Mayra Flores (TX-34).

No matter how hard these vulnerable Republicans may try to hide their extreme positions, voters know that these members are responsible for undermining reproductive freedoms at every turn.

REMINDER: House Republicans have not introduced or signed onto a bill that would actually protect IVF access, only non-binding resolutions – both of which are backed by co-sponsors of the Life at Conception Act – that do nothing to protect women’s reproductive freedoms.

DCCC Spokesperson Courtney Rice:
“House Republicans are flagrant hypocrites who have spent their entire tenure in the majority attacking reproductive rights at every turn. Now, they are hiding behind toothless resolutions and empty public statements because they know their relentless attacks on reproductive freedoms will cost them at the ballot box.”
