Vulnerable Scott Garrett Is Running Out of Corporate Donors

PNC Bank joins long list of corporate donors to drop financial support, further isolating Garrett and his extreme views

The fallout continues as corporate donors do the right thing and drop their financial support for North Jersey Congressman Scott Garrett due to his anti-equality views and anti-LGBT comments.

Yesterday, NorhJersey.com reported that “PNC Bank is the latest financial institution to sever ties with U.S. Rep. Scott Garrett, R-Wantage, following his decision to not give money to a Republican campaign fund because of its support of gay candidates.”

Garrett garnered local backlash and embarrassing headlines this past summer for trying to prevent LGBT candidates from getting elected to office.

Since then, Garrett’s bad publicity has driven many of his long-time corporate donors to drop their financial support.

As Garrett drives away his corporate donor friends, his fundraising has been underperforming in contrast to his Democratic challenger. This increasing vulnerability prompted NJ.com to recently ask, “Is this the sign N.J.’s 6-term Congressman may be in trouble this time?”

Here’s a quick recap of major financial institutions and long-time Garrett corporate supporters dropping their support for Garrett this year:

July: Bloomberg reported shortly after that Goldman Sachs “has decided to stop making political action committee donations to Garrett.”

October: BBVA Compass told The Record, “After learning of U.S. Rep. Scott Garrett’s views … the BBVA Compass PAC decided it will no longer contribute to the congressman.”

December: The Record reported that Capitol One announced that they had “no plans to contribute to Congressman Garrett in the future.”

January: Bloomberg Businessweek reported that U.S. Bancorp and Nomura Holdings dropped their support for Garrett.

Now: NorthJersey.com reported that “PNC Bank is the latest financial institution to sever ties with U.S. Rep. Scott Garrett, R-Wantage, following his decision to not give money to a Republican campaign fund because of its support of gay candidates.”

“It is clear that Garrett’s anti-equality views and belief that sexual orientation should disqualify someone from running for office are driving his corporate donors away,” said Bryan Lesswing at the DCCC. “As Garrett continues to take his bigotry out of the closet and lose his corporate donors, he is jeopardizing his chances of keeping his seat this November.”
