Vulnerable Wisconsin Republicans Back Anti-Abortion Extremist in State’s Supreme Court Race

Bryan Steil, Derrick Van Orden put their trust and the future of Wisconsin behind flawed candidate

Today, as Wisconsinites head into the final day of voting to decide the balance of the state Supreme Court, voters are reminded that vulnerable House Republicans Bryan Steil and Derrick Van Orden are just as dangerous and extreme as the candidate they have endorsed.

Dan Kelly is a dangerous judge who has compared Social Security to slaverypraised Justice Antonin Scalia’s dissent in Obergefell v. Hodges, the landmark Supreme Court case recognizing marriage equality, and is a staunchly anti-abortion, claiming abortion access promoted “sexual libertinism.”

Like Kelly, Steil and Van Orden are also fervently anti-choice. Steil called the overturning of Roe “a great victory for life,” and Van Orden said he is “100% pro-life,” believes life begins at conception and has compared abortion to genocide.

In addition to the endorsements from Steil and Van Orden, Kelly has earned the support of the three major anti-abortion groups in Wisconsin and has spent time on the campaign trail with January 6 insurrectionists – people just like Derrick Van Orden, who attended the January 6th insurrection.

DCCC spokesperson Tommy Garcia:
“It is no surprise anti-abortion, anti-democracy Republicans like Bryan Steil and Derrick Van Orden are doing everything they can to put MAGA extremist Dan Kelly on the Wisconsin Supreme Court. Come 2024, Wisconsinites will hold Bryan Steil and Derrick Van Orden accountable for their continued embrace of out-of-touch extremism.”
