WA-08 GOP Candidates Complicit in Republicans’ Crusade to End Access to Legal Abortion in America

Access to safe, legal abortion in America took a devastating blow this week with POLITICO reporting on a leaked draft Supreme Court majority opinion that would strike down Roe v. Wade and open the door for Republicans in Congress to pass a nationwide ban on abortion. Republican candidates in Washington’s Eighth Congressional District are complicit in this all-out assault on women’s freedoms.

Washington voters need to know the GOP candidates’ dangerous record on women’s reproductive freedom and health care:

  • Jesse Jensen opposes abortion at all stages and wants to defund Planned Parenthood, making it harder for Washington women to access basic health care services like birth control, cancer screenings, and preventative care.

  • Matt Larkin is staunchly anti-choice, even going as far as to falsely claim that he is the “only one who is pro-life” in the race. Larkin has called for banning abortion outright from conception – an extreme position that could also ban certain forms of birth control and Plan B. He was also praised for being “unashamedly pro-life” by the far-right Family Police Institute of Washington, which supports banning abortion entirely and has compared it to slavery.

  • Reagan Dunn has stood with extreme Republicans as they continue their assault on women’s health care and does not think Congress should act to protect a woman’s right to choose. During his bid for Attorney General, Dunn came out against protecting patient access to contraception at the pharmacy counter.

  • Scott Stephenson praised the leaked Supreme Court decision that would strike down Roe v. Wade and rollback decades of protections for women’s reproductive freedom.

Make no mistake – access to abortion is on the line this November and hinges on control of Congress. Just hours before the draft Supreme Court opinion was leaked, the Washington Post reported that congressional Republicans are working on a “push for a strict nationwide ban on the procedure if Republicans retake power in Washington.

DCCC spokesperson Johanna Warshaw:
“The stakes in this election could not be higher: electing any of the GOP candidates in Washington’s Eight District will put House Republicans one step closer to achieving their decades-long dream of ripping away women’s freedom to make their own decisions about their bodies.”
