WA-08 GOP Candidates Share Blame for the Overturning of Roe v. Wade

The Supreme Court has officially overturned Roe v. Wade, eliminating the constitutional right to abortion for millions of women and paving the way for Republicans to pass a nationwide ban on abortion.

It’s a future that WA-08 Republicans have long been working towards – and now the GOP candidates will have to own up to their extreme, deeply unpopular positions:

  • Jesse Jensen opposes abortion at all stages and wants to defund Planned Parenthood, making it harder for Washington women to access basic health care services like birth control, cancer screenings, and preventative care.

  • Matt Larkin is staunchly anti-choice, even going as far as to falsely claim that he is the “only one who is pro-life” in the race. Larkin has called for banning abortion outright from conception – an extreme position that could also ban certain forms of birth control and Plan B. He was also praised for being “unashamedly pro-life” by the far-right Family Police Institute of Washington, which supports banning abortion entirely and has compared it to slavery.

  • Reagan Dunn was the only King County councilmember to vote against protecting a woman’s right to choose – and was called out by local press for his “about face” on abortion rights as he panders to his far-right base.

  • Scott Stephenson praised the leaked Supreme Court decision that would strike down Roe v. Wade and rollback decades of protections for women’s reproductive freedom.

Make no mistake: Washington Republicans are on the wrong side of this issue. Polling conducted after the leak of the SCOTUS draft opinion overturning Roe shows: by a two-to-one margin, people oppose Roe being overturned; 80% of people believe abortion should be decided between a woman and her doctor; and nearly two-thirds of people oppose the GOP’s plan to institute a nationwide abortion ban.

The GOP candidates will be held accountable for their party’s role in decimating women’s reproductive freedoms and their plan to institute a nationwide abortion ban.

DCCC spokesperson Johanna Warshaw:
“The stakes in this election could not be higher: every GOP candidate is unabashedly anti-choice and would be a reliable vote in Congress against women’s reproductive freedoms. They couldn’t be more out of step with Washingtonians – and we will remind Washington voters of their cruel extremism every day until November.”
