As a result of House Republicans’ failure to extend Affordable Care Act subsidies before they expired, raising costs for millions of Americans, the Wall Street Journal reports that many Americans are now spending more on their health insurance premiums than their mortgages.
The numbers are staggering:
“A hypothetical married couple of 63-year-olds living in Cheyenne, Wyo., making $85,000 a year, putting them right above the 400% threshold, would go from paying nothing for a low-end ACA plan to $3,417 a month, an amount that is about half of their total pretax income, according to an analysis from Norris.”
Despite creating this crisis, House Republicans have refused to do anything to lower health care costs — with the House only passing the extension of the ACA subsidies after House Democrats organized a discharge petition to force a vote on the issue.
DCCC Spokesperson Aidan Johnson:
“While House Republicans hit the red carpet for the premier of MELANIA, American families are getting hit with skyrocketing health care bills. Voters are sick and tired of the broken promises, which is why Mike Johnson will lose his gavel next November.”
