Washington Post: “Democratic turnout is up, even in Republican districts”

Democratic turnout is surging in races across the country, putting Republicans on defense everywhere from classic toss-up seats to districts Trump won by double-digits. According to an analysis from the Washington Post, the current turnout trend is outpacing the last two midterm cycles, including 2018 when Democrats gained 40 seats.

Washington Post:

“So far this year, people cast 12.6 million ballots in Democratic House primaries compared with 8.6 million in GOP primaries.”

Not only has Democratic turnout in House primaries “supercharged,” Republicans have seen a drop in enthusiasm among their own voters. Compared to 2022, turnout increased in nearly twice as many Democratic races as GOP races. One Democrat who flipped a Georgia state legislative district said Republicans are “put off by what this administration and what the Republican Party has been doing.”

Democratic turnout is even up in primaries for districts that Republicans gerrymandered, with Dems having “received a majority of votes in the primaries for three of the five districts redrawn in Texas to benefit Republicans.” In California, Dems are also leading in primary votes — further proof that Republican efforts to silence voters is backfiring.

DCCC Spokesperson Liam Buckley:
“Everything is more expensive because House Republicans have broken their promise to lower the cost of living for everyday Americans. It’s no wonder that at every opportunity voters have had to cast their ballot this year, we’ve seen turnout at levels demonstrating how Democrats have the momentum, message, and — most importantly — the American people on our side. We will take back the House majority in November.”
