Washington Post: “Republicans Struggle to Explain Shutdown of the House”

As Speaker Mike Johnson keeps the House closed for business while more and more Americans blame House Republicans for their shutdown, the Washington Post declares: “So far, Johnson’s plan has failed.”

On day 24 of the GOP shutdown, tens of millions of Americans face looming skyrocketing health care costs and Republicans – under the direction of Speaker Mike Johnson – refuse to come to work. Recent reporting from the Washington Post takes a closer look at Johnson’s failing strategy, shining a light on how he’s losing the plot.
First, Johnson and House Republicans are losing the public at large:

A new Reuters poll this week found 50 percent blamed Republicans and 43 percent blamed Democrats.

Just as bad for Mike Johnson, he’s also losing his own own rank-and-file members:

“This shutdown strategy is old and Republicans need to have new tactics,” Rep. Beth Van Duyne (R-Texas) told House Republicans on a private call Tuesday afternoon, as federal agencies passed their third week without funding.

Mike Johnson doesn’t seem to care. The Washington Post column best summarizes the state of play:

But Johnson has not altered his strategy. The shutdown of the House has now reached almost five weeks.

[…]

“That has given Democrats an opening to go on the offensive, targeting Johnson over his refusal to call the House back into session.

DCCC Spokesperson Viet Shelton:
”The American public and even Mike Johnson’s own members all agree: House Republicans should get back to work – because what they are doing now isn’t working.”
