The Trump administration announced it will not reopen ACA enrollment amid the growing coronavirus pandemic
As the coronavirus continues to rapidly spread throughout the nation, the American people deserve to know if Washington Republicans agree with President Trump’s decision to block uninsured COVID-19 patients from enrolling in the Affordable Care Act’s federal exchanges and receiving the proper health care coverage they deserve during these tumultuous times.
This decision leaves nearly 28 million Americans in 38 states uninsured and responsible for exorbitant medical bills if they contract this virus and need medical treatment.
This announcement comes days after Trump affirmed that he continues to support a lawsuit—which was backed by House Republicans—that would eliminate the Affordable Care Act and its protections.
Health experts say Americans who are uninsured may hesitate to get checked if they feel ill, which could lead to their infecting others. As of Tuesday, more than 188,000 people had tested positive in the U.S. and roughly 3,900 had died. Thousands more have gone to emergency rooms or been hospitalized.
Huffington Post put it succinctly: “President Donald Trump and his administration have a message for uninsured Americans who fear the cost of treatment for COVID-19, the illness caused by the coronavirus: We don’t care.”
Statement From DCCC Spokesperson Fabiola Rodriguez
“In the midst of a global pandemic Washington Republicans continue their crusade against the health and safety of the American public. By blocking uninsured COVID-19 patients from getting healthcare, Trump and his allies have decided to bankrupt American families. The American people deserve to know if House Republicans will stand up for the millions of Americans who face the challenge of being jobless and uninsured during the COVID-19 pandemic.”
