Watch Carlos Run: Shady Genting Deal Edition

Corrupt Carlos’ feigns “neutrality” on his own scheme to enrich campaign donors

Yesterday, the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners voted to proceed with an up-to-$14 million dollar taxpayer-funded monorail project resulting from an unsolicited bid from Malaysian casino developer Genting.

Monorail lobbyists have contributed tens of thousands to Corrupt Carlos Giménez’s mayoral campaigns, and the company’s lobbyist has teamed up with Giménez throughout the shady process leading up to this deal. Giménez had an off-books private meeting in China with Genting, then wiped a burner phone to keep the meeting secret. He even secretly filmed an ad promoting Genting’s monorail bid – before ever receiving a bid.

And yet, shortly before the commission was forced to vote on the “rushed” proposal, Giménez feigned “neutrality,” claiming that he wanted to see more details. After getting caught spending years pulling out all the stops, including bypassing the typical timeline of hearings, to ensure the taxpayer-funded award goes to Genting, Giménez tried to claim neutrality on a deal that literally has his name on it.

“Corrupt Carlos Giménez has been working with lobbyists and campaign donors to engineer a taxpayer grant for Genting for years,” said DCCC Spokesperson Sarah Guggenheimer. “He may have wiped his burner phone, but Corrupt Carlos Giménez’s last minute feeble attempt at ‘neutrality’ does nothing to erase his track record of enriching his friends at taxpayers’ expense.”
