“Congresswoman McMorris Rodgers is so desperate to hide the Republican Party’s crusade against people with asthma, cancer, diabetes and other pre-existing conditions that she is telling demonstrable lies. McMorris Rodgers’ record of failing to listen to her constituents, and instead fighting to increase healthcare costs on consumers, is crystal clear.” – DCCC Spokesperson Drew Godinich
CLAIM ONE: Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers, in an interview on KREM, that she is ‘committed to pre-existing condition protections’.
REALITY CHECK NUMBER ONE: She voted dozens of times to repeal the Affordable Care Act, which would’ve eliminated protections for those with pre-existing conditions. And, she voted for the AHCA, which would’ve gutted protections for those with pre-existing conditions.
CLAIM TWO: That Republicans and Democrats agreed on protections for pre-existing conditions in the Affordable Care Act.
REALITY CHECK NUMBER TWO: Only Democrats were responsible for pre-existing condition protections in the Affordable Care Act.
CLAIM THREE: And that the Washington Post conducted a fact check showing that the Republican healthcare plan protected people with pre-existing conditions.
REALITY CHECK NUMBER THREE: The Washington Post fact check she references actually acknowledges that protections for those with pre-existing conditions are weakened in the GOP bill. Moreover, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office and Politifact confirmed that her bill weakens protections for those with pre-existing conditions, including making health insurance unaffordable and jacking up premiums.
