“We Are Fearful:” Arizonans Protest David Schweikert’s Plans to Destroy Social Security

Schweikert has repeatedly called for cutting Social Security and raising the retirement age

Arizonans are terrified of David Schweikert’s plans to destroy Social Security.

Dozens of Arizonans gathered outside Schweikert’s office yesterday to protest the vulnerable Republican for trying to rob Arizonans of their hard-earned benefits.

After repeatedly calling to cut Social Security and raise the retirement age, Schweikert voted for the Big, Ugly Law – which Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently boasted includes a scheme that’s a “backdoor for privatizing Social Security.”  The new law, which Schweikert helped write, is also going to make Social Security run out of money faster.

And of course, Schweikert sat idly by while Elon Musk gutted Social Security – a plan that has since led to a 20% reduction in staff.

DCCC Spokesperson Lindsay Reilly:
“David Schweikert is on a mission to destroy Social Security. After repeatedly calling to gut seniors’ hard-earned benefits, Schweikert helped write the Big, Ugly Law – which experts agree is going to make Social Security run out of money faster. Schweikert should be ashamed for trying to take money out of seniors’ pockets.”

In case you missed it:

  • Advocates have been alarmed by actions taken by President Donald Trump’s administration, including allowing Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency to seek data from the program and baseless claims that millions of dead people are receiving benefits.
  • The “one big, beautiful bill” he backed this year speeds up [Social Security’s] insolvency.
  • Others have pointed to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s comments on his “Trump account” proposal as a “backdoor to privatization” for Social Security as evidence that the administration doesn’t intend to save the program.
  • Schweikert has suggested that Congress needs to make cuts to funding in both Social Security and Medicare and has also advocated for raising the retirement age from 67 to 69.
  • Schweikert did not respond to a request for comment from the Mirror.
  • Somo said her organization has tried for about a month to get a meeting with Schweikert to discuss their concerns about his policy proposals, adding that they have not heard back from anyone in his office.
  • As we mark the 90th anniversary of the signing of the Social Security Act, Valley seniors are taking action today by holding what’s known as a “silver sit-in” at Congressman David Schweikert’s office.
  • They’re calling out Schweikert for voting to cut Social Security during his time in Congress.
  • A group of seniors protested outside Arizona Congressman David Schweikert’s office yesterday calling for more protections for Social Security.
  • The White House did make cuts to Social Security’s workforce earlier this year, laying off about 7,000 employees.
  • “What’s happened with the cuts already in Medicaid and SNAP and other essential programs, we are fearful that the next step will be Social Security – regardless of what the President keeps saying that he won’t cut those programs. He already has.”
