What Iowans Are Reading: Cedar Rapids Gazette Ed Board Praises Bipartisan Infrastructure Deal, Columnist Slams Hinson and Miller-Meeks’ Opposition

Cedar Rapids Gazette Column: “Hinson and Miller-Meeks should have voted for the infrastructure bill. It’s popular, bipartisan and makes needed investments in Iowa.”

This week, as President Biden signed the bipartisan infrastructure deal to bring historic investments to the Hawkeye State, the Cedar Rapids Gazette Editorial Board is out with a new editorial praising the bill. As the Ed Board writes:

“The bipartisan federal infrastructure bill comes at a great time for a state with aging roads, dirty water and a stark urban-rural broadband internet divide. […] It will be a historic investment in the basic infrastructure needed to grow the U.S. economy. We were disappointed to see the large majority of Republicans in Congress voted against the bill, including all three of Iowa’s GOP House members and one of our GOP senators.”

But that’s not all: another Gazette column is calling out Ashley Hinson and Mariannette Miller-Meeks for putting loyalty to party leaders above common sense solutions to fix highways, bridges, and water infrastructure and create good-paying jobs in Iowa.

“Hinson talks a lot about the need for flood control. The infrastructure bill includes $50 billion to help communities become more resilient in the face of climate change, including flood protection. Consider that next time she visits the Cedar River in Cedar Rapids for a photo op.

“Hinson and Miller-Meeks should have voted for the infrastructure bill. It’s popular, bipartisan and makes needed investments in Iowa. Instead, they decided to make a political calculation that would keep them in good standing in the Trump GOP. Denying Democrats a win was more important than delivering for their districts. It’s sad, but hardly surprising.”

While House Democrats deliver critical infrastructure investments, Hinson and Miller-Meeks would rather play politics and vote against their constituents instead of doing the right thing for Iowa.
