What They Are Saying: Ken Calvert Betrays Californians in Deciding Vote to Cut Medicaid – After Promising to Protect It

In case you missed it, Ken Calvert cast the deciding vote on House Republicans’ Tax Scam last week – putting tens of thousands of his constituents at risk of losing their health care and threatening food access for over 270,000 households in his district – all to give permanent tax breaks to the wealthy.

After lying to his constituents for months that he wouldn’t cut Medi-Cal programs for the most vulnerable in his community, he did just that.

HERE’S WHAT CALIFORNIANS ARE SAYING:

Mother Jones: House GOPers Just Voted for the Biggest Medicaid Cuts in History—After Promising to Protect It

  • Rep. Ken Calvert…likewise assured constituents “I am committed to protecting Medicaid benefits for Americans who rely on the program, including children, mothers, and the disabled.” He also voted yes.
The Sacramento Bee: Nine California Republicans voted for Trump’s cruel budget bill. Remember them

  • Nine California House Republicans voted for an odious bill driven by President Donald Trump that will sacrifice the social safety net for working-class Americans so that Trump’s billionaire benefactors can become even richer.
  • The 1,000-page package…would not have been possible without every last California House Republican signing on as co-conspirators in a wealth grab that will strain America’s future ability to borrow and make the lives of humble Americans even harder.
  • It will hurt struggling Californians and undermine clean energy programs championed in California. It will raise the national debt ceiling by $4 trillion. And it will slash health benefits for…many of the nearly 15 million Californians enrolled in Medicaid, known as Medi-Cal in California.
  • “The proposed cuts will gut Medi-Cal, destabilize our entire health care system and rip care for millions of Californians, from moms fighting cancer to children who need asthma medicine, to seniors relying on nursing homes and veterans who count on home care.
  • California hospitals heavily rely on Medicaid funding and many would be at risk of cutting essential services or closing their doors altogether.”
  • Let’s not ignore [the] California representatives who put party over people when they voted for this shameless piece of legislation. Say their names, so you don’t forget them…. Ken Calvert
  • For Californians, it’s more important than ever to stand united in efforts to overturn the Republican majority in Congress and …assist those whose safety net has been so cruelly yanked out from under them.
