Where in the World is Tom Barrett? Hiding From Michiganders and Lying About Why

Tom Barrett has refused to meet with his constituents face-to-face for nearly a year now. And recent reporting reveals his latest excuse is a total lie.

Barrett’s office “claimed the US Capitol Police told members of Congress not to hold town halls” for safety purposes – but there is “no evidence of such guidance.” Senator Slotkin’s office “was unaware of any new guidelines” regarding town halls, and “Capitol Police themselves haven’t backed up Barrett’s excuse either.”

REMINDER: Other members of Michigan’s delegation are holding town halls. Barrett refuses to face his constituents because he knows he can’t defend his disastrous record.

“Barrett is willing to show up at a big anti-abortion rally with no security. He’ll vote on budget plans that raise costs and gut health care. But when it comes time to actually face the people living in Michigan’s 7th district, suddenly it’s too dangerous.”

DCCC Spokesperson Katie Smith:
“Tom Barrett thinks he can sell Michiganders on phony excuses and total lies to explain why he won’t do his job. The truth is, Barrett refuses to face his constituents because he can’t defend his record of ripping away their health care, raising their costs, and giving handouts to his special interest bosses – and unfortunately for him, Michiganders will fire Barrett next year whether or not he shows up to see it.”

“Republican Rep. Tom Barrett has been in Congress for almost a year now… but do you know what he’s never done? Hold a single in-person town hall meeting with the people he’s supposed to represent.”

“And when his staff finally got asked why, the excuse they gave was, well, full of s**t.”

“At a recent event, Tom Barrett’s district director…was caught on camera by Distill Social explaining why Barrett has been refusing to hold public town halls.”

“The official story coming from Barrett’s office is, ‘we’d love to meet you, but the Capitol Police told us that it’s just too dangerous.’”

“There’s just one problem though: there’s no evidence that guidance actually exists.”

“Barrett has never hosted an in-person town hall since getting elected in Michigan’s 7th district. His office claimed the US Capitol Police told members of Congress not to hold town halls because of safety threats.”

“When reporters asked Barrett’s office for more details, like ‘when was this guidance issued,’ and ‘what exactly did the Capitol Police say,’ they didn’t respond.”

“A spokesperson for US Senator Elissa Slotkin, who held this seat before Barrett, said they’ve heard of no such new guidance from Capitol Police about town halls. And Capitol Police themselves haven’t backed up Barrett’s excuse either.”

“And here’s the kicker. Just days before… Barrett spoke at an anti-abortion rally at the State Capitol with thousands of people, huge crowds, and no formal security around him.”

“It’s important to note here that several other members of Michigan’s delegation – both Democrats and Republicans – are still holding plenty of in-person town hall events with voters.”
