While Democratic Delegation Invests in New Mexico, Herrell Votes to Defund the Police

Yesterday, President Biden signed a historic, bipartisan spending bill into law – greenlighting critical funding to support our democratic ally Ukraine, while cutting costs for hardworking American families and investing in security at home.

Thanks to the advocacy of New Mexico’s Democratic delegation, New Mexico is benefitting from the spending bill in a big way: the state is set to receive critical investments, including millions for local law enforcement and safety personnel.

But once again, if it had been up to one New Mexico lawmaker, none of these programs would receive funding: Yvette Herrell voted against funding for New Mexico police departments, border patrol and first responders, including:

• $512 million for Community Oriented Policing Services programs

• $575 million for Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) prevention and prosecution programs

• $100 million to hire new Border Patrol officers

• $1 million for a local trauma recovery center for victims of violent crime

• $1 million for a local fire station

• $1.4 million for a local gunshot detection system

• $400,000 for communication equipment for Carlsbad first responders
