Why Is Mike Lawler Trying to Avoid His Jewish Constituents?

Last night, vulnerable New York Republican Mike Lawler held a town hall at sundown on Yom Kippur – starting before the holiday had ended.

New York’s 17th Congressional District has one of the largest Jewish populations in the country and is home to roughly 90,000 Jews, making up about 12 percent of the district’s population.

Lawler isn’t the only New York Republican to misstep around the High Holidays. Santos also scheduled a town hall during sundown on the Shabbat between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

DCCC Spokesperson Ellie Dougherty:
“Mike Lawler scheduling a town hall on the holiest day on the Jewish calendar begs the question: why is Lawler trying to avoid his Jewish constituents?”
