Will Hurd Votes to Block DREAMers from Serving in Our Nation’s Military
Republican amendment put anti-immigrant, obstructionist politics before national security
Today, one day after the four-year anniversary of President Obama’s immigration relief programs, Will Hurd continued his assault on hardworking young immigrants by voting to block DREAMers from answering the call to serve our nation in uniform. This amendment would have undone current Department of Defense policy which allows young immigrants to serve our country if they possess critically-needed skills that are deemed to be valuable to our nation’s security interests.
“This politically-motivated amendment put politics before smart security policy by blocking the military’s ability to recruit DREAMers if it’s in our national interest,” said Javier Gamboa of the DCCC. “Further, today’s vote is just the latest example of Will Hurd being on the wrong side of history by opposing President Obama’s historic DACA and DAPA programs. Millions of Americans are impacted by the President’s immigration actions, and they will remember Hurd’s constant efforts to not only tear families apart, but deny DREAMers the right to serve and protect the country they know and love.”
Earlier this year, in a nearly unprecedented action, Speaker Ryan led House Republicans in sending an amicus brief to the Supreme Court on behalf of the House opposing expanded DACA and DAPA. As Americans and immigrant communities across the country await the decision this month, House Republicans continue to show time and time again that they join Donald Trump in their support for anti-immigrant policies like mass deportations.

Hoy, un día después del cuarto aniversario de DACA, Will Hurd continúo con sus ataques hacia jóvenes inmigrantes cuando voto para negarle a DREAMers la oportunidad de servir en las fuerzas armadas de nuestro país. Esta enmienda eliminaría la póliza del Departamento de Defensa que permite a DREAMers servir en las fuerzas armadas, particularmente, aquellos jóvenes con habilidades consideraras citicas para la seguridad nacional.

En un acto sin precedente, el presidente de la Cámara de Representantes, Paul Ryan, dirigió a los republicanos a mandarle un escrito legal a la Corte Suprema en contra de DACA y DAPA.
