Today, the draconian Republican abortion ban in Texas (S.B. 8) went into effect, all but eliminating access to safe, legal abortion for patients across the state. Texans deserve to know: Will Wesley Hunt stand with Texas women and condemn his party’s radical abortion ban?
The Texas bill is one of the most radical, restrictive abortion bans in the country. It makes abortion illegal after six weeks of pregnancy, long before many people even know they’re pregnant. The legislation also encourages wanna-be vigilantes to target health care providers across the state by allowing anyone — from abusive partners to neighbors to complete strangers — the right to sue any person they believe provided or assisted a patient with accessing an abortion. They can even collect $10,000 for each successful claim.
Instead of standing with Texas women, Wesley Hunt has stood by and watched as the most radical members of his party all but end access to safe, legal abortion in the state. His tacit approval of the most restrictive abortion ban in the country sends a message loud and clear that if given the choice between standing up for Texans or toeing the party line, he’ll choose his Republican Party every time. Wesley Hunt’s silence as reproductive health care hangs in the balance flies in the face of the 77% of Americans who support Roe v. Wade and its protections.
“Wesley Hunt’s silence as Republicans all but end safe, legal abortion in Texas makes it clear: His loyalty lies with the radical, fringe wing of his party, not Texans,” said DCCC spokesperson Monica Robinson. “This cruel legislation inserts politicians between patients and their doctors and empowers wanna-be vigilantes to target health care providers. By standing by and doing nothing as this draconian ban goes into effect, Wesley Hunt has proven he won’t stand up for Texas women when it matters the most.”
