In His Own Words: On Social Security, Rod Blum Would Privatize It

As Rod Blum tries to rewrite history and run away from the positions he advocated for years as a newspaper columnist, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is holding him accountable for his reckless and out-of-touch agenda by highlighting Rod Blum’s own words.

Today’s example: Rod Blum supports privatizing Social Security. As a newspaper columnist, Rod Blum strongly defended George W. Bush’s efforts to privatize Social Security.

“If Rod Blum had his way, we would have privatized Social Security years ago and gambled the retirement security of Iowans on Wall Street,” said Brandon Lorenz of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. “Thousands of Iowans would have had their retirement security put at risk when the stock market crashed if Rod Blum had succeeded in privatizing Social Security when he first suggested it.”

BACKGROUND:

Blum Supported President Bush Privatization of Social Security. In 2002 Rod Blum wrote: “President Bush’s Social Security Commission, chaired by former Democratic Sen. Moynihan, recommends personal retirement accounts that would let workers build up true nest eggs for themselves. […] We should let people choose: the old system with a 1 percent return on your money and you own nothing or a new system with larger retirement checks and a nest-egg you own.” [Telegraph Herald, 9/1/02]
