WRAP UP: Scott Perry Had a Bad Week

Rep. Scott Perry’s blatant and dangerous extremism got him in hot water back home. Here is a look back at Perry’s bad week:

FACT-CHECKED: Perry Lied About The Election Being Stolen, Again

Fox43: Congressman falsely says there were 100K more votes cast in PA than voters | Capitol Beat Fact Check

Congressman Perry’s claim that there were more than 100,000 votes than there were voters in the 2020 Election is false. It lacks current information, and doesn’t take into consideration write-ins, and people who voted in the election, just not for president.

DISRESPECTING LAW ENFORCEMENT: On Wednesday, Perry Voted Against Honoring The Police Officers Who Protected the Capitol on January 6

York Dispatch: Scott Perry votes against awarding medal to police who defended Capitol on Jan. 6

U.S. Rep. Scott Perry on Tuesday joined 20 GOP colleagues to oppose awarding the Congressional Gold Medal to all police officers who defended the Capitol during the violent Jan. 6 riots.

York Daily Record: ‘It’s all garbage’: Why PA Rep. Scott Perry rejects medals for police who defended Capitol

The congressman told a Politico reporter, “it’s all politics, it’s all garbage” when asked about the bill. He also appeared on a Fox News station Wednesday morning and said he largely opposed the legislation because it politicized the officers’ service while in uniform.

“What is absolutely outrageous is politicizing their supreme sacrifice while in duty, while in service, while in uniform,” Perry told Fox 43. “That’s what this bill did. This is not about politics — it should not be about politics.”

Erie Times-News Editorial: Perry betrays his brothers in arms

But when it came time to choose between focusing on the people or the politics of the situation, Perry chose poorly. He chose the latter.

We’d suggest that when history looks back at HR 3325 it’ll be Perry and his ilk who’ll be remembered for making a political statement on an occasion that called for unity.

Because the politics of the day shouldn’t place a limit on the worth of the sacrifices made by anyone in uniform. As a military man who served with distinction, Perry should know that better than anyone.

City & State Pennsylvania: This week’s biggest Winners & Losers

LOSERS: Scott Perry

U.S. Rep. Scott Perry was among 21 Republicans who voted against awarding the Congressional Gold Medal to all police officers who defended the Capitol during the Jan. 6 riots. He said the vote was “all politics,” but he received immediate criticism from opponents and constituents. Perry has been at the forefront of former President Donald Trump’s debunked claims that the election was rigged in Pennsylvania. Perry’s fed the conspiracy theories that led to pro-Trump rioters storming the Capitol, and was even protected by officers once the rioters broke in. For someone who has stressed the need to “back the blue,” honoring his protectors for their bravery was apparently too much for him.

Pennsylvania Capital-Star: ‘It’s all politics, it’s all garbage’: Voting against medals for cops, 21 Republicans hit a new low in insurrection denial | John L. Micek

Again, the bill passed the House by a vote of 406-21. You can’t get much more bipartisan.

But that’s how far the Trumpified GOP has fallen, and how far it will go to deny the facts of a day that shook American democracy to its very foundations: Far enough that they will even deny honoring those who gave, as the what the greatest of all Republicans once described as, “the last full measure of devotion.”

That’s garbage.

Local21: ‘It’s not about me’: Congressman Perry defends Congressional Gold Medal vote

In an interview seeking to do damage control, Perry called the vote honoring officers, “the most disrespectful thing you can do” and said voting to honor the officers would be the “correct political vote” but not “morally correct.”

ABC27: This Week in Pennsylvania

HOST: This week he [Perry] voted no to give Capitol police medals for you know, the bravery they showed that day when there was an insurrection there at the Capitol. What do you make of that vote? Only Pennsylvania congressman to do so.

COMMENTATOR DANIELLE GROSS: I believe that Scott Perry is an extremist who regularly lies about the election and about the priorities of central Pennsylvanians and this is no exception.

VETERAN GOP CONSULTANT CHRIS NICHOLAS: I think the Congressman needs to better explain why he voted. His quote right afterwards that it was “all politics, all garbage” is not enough of an explanation.

ABC27: Scott Perry among 20 other Representatives to vote against awarding Capitol Officers

Midstate Congressman Scott Perry was the only House member from Pennsylvania to oppose awarding police officers who defended the Capitol during the January 6 riot. Perry and 20 other Republicans voted against the measure which passed by a vote of 406 to 21.

Patriot-News: U.S. Rep. Scott Perry on his no vote on Congressional medal for Capitol Police: ‘politically motivated narrative’

Perry, a member of the ultra-conservative Freedom Caucus and stalwart supporter of former President Donald Trump, was one of 21 House Republicans who voted against the awarding of the medal. The Congressional Gold Medal is bestowed by Congress to recognize distinguished national service.

The measure passed the House with overwhelming bipartisan support from 406 lawmakers.

Perry’s vote set him apart from other Republican House members from Pennsylvania, all of whom voted in favor of awarding the medal. {…}

In an increasingly purple district, Perry has recently come under fire for what many critics say are extremist views that do not represent his district.
