Republicans remain silent as Rep. Lance Gooden spews racist and xenophobic comments toward Rep. Judy Chu
On Wednesday, Republican Rep. Lance Gooden attacked Congresswoman Judy Chu in a Fox interview, using the congresswoman’s heritage to question her loyalty to the United States, falsely suggesting Chu had ties to the Chinese Communist Party to stoke hatred and division. Rep. Chu has made transformative contributions to the country and her community through her leadership, but rather than tell the truth, Gooden and House Republicans have resorted to spreading outright disinformation through right-wing outlets.
Despite Gooden’s racist and xenophobic comments, California Reps. Michelle Steel and Young Kim have remained silent on these politically motivated attacks on their AAPI colleague. Their shameful silence comes at a time when anti-Asian hate continues to threaten communities and Republicans continue to weaponize dangerous misinformation for self-serving power.
Allen Chen, DCCC Senior Advisor for AAPI Engagement:
“Young Kim and Michelle Steel’s refusal to condemn their GOP colleague’s racist and xenophobic attacks on Rep. Judy Chu is not only shameful, it’s downright dangerous. Instead of using their platform to help end anti-Asian racism, Kim and Steel continue to condone these cruel Republican tactics that use misinformation to stoke hate and division for political gain.”
