Young’s Recent Budget Posturing Hides the Full Story

Young was the ONLY Iowa Senate candidate to support Ted Cruz’s shutdown tactics

Congressman David Young – lifelong DC insider – is clearly feeling the pressure to create a suitable “message” to deal with the fallout from the Republican Party’s failure to pass a budget. In a recent email to constituents, he stated the obvious:

“If we are ever going to get America back on a path of fiscal common sense it will begin with the enactment of a yearly budget.”

What his email does not mention is that he supported Ted Cruz’s disastrous and widely criticized (by both parties) government shutdown stunt. This is what Young said at the time:

“You know, Ted Cruz was on the floor for 21 hours and it was so nice to see, finally, the senate deliberating…We need to do more of that.”

Praising a self-serving stunt that cost our economy an estimated $24 billion is shamefully out-of-touch and might explain why so many Iowans are tired of career Washington insiders like David Young.

“Congressman David Young’s recent posturing simply does not tell the full story about his support for the fiscally reckless government shutdown,” said DCCC Spokesman Tyler Law. “Hardworking Iowans would be better served if the Congressman actually passed a budget rather than creating convenient talking points to deal with the fallout of the Republican failure to do their job.”

Young Defended Federal Government Shutdown As A Smart Strategy For Republicans, Praised Ted Cruz Filibuster. “When asked whether the recent federal government shut-down was a smart strategy for Republicans, David Young was the only one of the candidates to directly defend it. ‘I was proud to watch the House of Representatives and the Senate fight ObamaCare — defunding it, delaying it, repealing it,’ Young said. ‘You know, Ted Cruz was on the floor for 21 hours and it was so nice to see, finally, the senate deliberating…We need to do more of that.’” [Radio Iowa, 10/23/13]

Federal Government Shutdown Took $24 Billion Out Of The Economy. “The shutdown also forced non-government business losses, temporary layoffs and other interruptions in business spending. The full extent of the damage won’t be known for some time. Economists at Standard & Poor’s estimate the total cost at about $24 billion, or a 0.6 percent GDP haircut. Others guess it’s about half that. Either way, it’s a heavy price to pay.”  [NBC News, 10/17/13]
