Zach Nunn Voted to Gut Medicaid and Rural Health Care Funding. Now, MercyOne Ottumwa is Shutting Its Doors.

Last week, MercyOne Ottumwa announced it will be shutting its doors in February. This comes after Zach Nunn voted for the largest cuts to Medicaid in history in the Big, Ugly Law.

Nunn’s vote will “cut federal Medicaid funding by hundreds of billions of dollars over the next decade, resulting in reduced enrollment and increased pressure on provider services, particularly in rural areas.”

This is the second closure announced in recent weeks, as Iowans will be forced to go elsewhere for care and rural hospitals will have to shoulder even more of a burden as yet another health care provider shuts down.

DCCC Spokesperson Katie Smith:
“Zach Nunn voted to slash Medicaid funding that rural hospitals and health care clinics depend on. Now, rural Iowans once again are left to face the consequences of Nunn’s callous agenda: tax cuts for billionaires, fewer health care options for Iowa families.”

Ottumwa Courier: Political leaders react as Ottumwa loses primary care clinic

  • The impending closure of a primary care clinic in Ottumwa and recent reductions in services at another have prompted political reaction from Iowa leaders.
  • Democrats criticized the closure as part of a broader erosion of rural health care access in Iowa, particularly in response to recent cuts in Medicaid funding contained in a federal budget package last year.
  • All four members of Iowa’s Republican U.S. House delegation — Reps. Nunn, Ashley Hinson, Mariannette Miller-Meeks and Randy Feenstra — voted for the federal budget package commonly referred to as the “Big Beautiful Bill,” which included significant reductions to Medicaid spending.
  • According to the Congressional Budget Office, the bill is projected to cut federal Medicaid funding by hundreds of billions of dollars over the next decade, resulting in reduced enrollment and increased pressure on provider services, particularly in rural areas.
  • The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee also weighed in. Spokesperson Katie Smith said in a statement that the closure reflects the impact of federal policy decisions affecting rural providers.
  • “Zach Nunn voted to cut critical funding for Iowa’s rural hospitals and health care providers,” Smith said. “Now, clinics are closing and Iowans are feeling the consequences.”

Meidas Touch: Rural Iowa Clinics Are Shutting Down Due to Trump’s Budget; It Could Mean Trouble For House Republicans

Rep. Zach Nunn voted for the One Big Beautiful Bill, now his district is losing healthcare

  • A healthcare center in Ottumwa, Iowa is shutting down due to drastic cuts in Medicaid funding as part of Trump’s “One Big Beautiful” budget bill. Republican Zach Nunn who represents Ottumwa voted for Trump’s budget bill, along with every other Republican member of Iowa’s congressional delegation.
  • 110,000 Iowans are also set to be kicked off their health insurance because of cuts to the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, according to estimates from the Congressional Budget Office. More healthcare center closures in Iowa are expected as Medicaid funding dries up after draconian Republican cuts.
  • “Zach Nunn voted to cut critical funding for Iowa’s rural hospitals and health care providers,” Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee spokesperson Katie Smith said. “Now, clinics are closing and Iowans are feeling the consequences.”
  • Nunn’s seat in Congress is considered vulnerable for Republicans in the November midterms in a year that has seen GOP control shrink to only a two seat majority. Cook Political Report moved the race for Nunn’s Iowa 3rd District from “Lean Republican” to “Toss Up” as of Thursday January 15th. A primary election to decide Nunn’s Democratic challenger will be held on June 2nd.
