Zach Nunn’s Priorities: More Money for War in Iran, Cuts to Iowans’ Health Care

Des Moines Register: “Asked whether he would back war funding even if it meant cuts to health care spending, Nunn said ‘I don’t think the two are tied’ but emphasized the need for defense spending.”

The Des Moines Register reports that when Zach Nunn was asked if he’d vote for even more money for his war in Iran even if it “meant cuts to health care spending,” Nunn “emphasized the need for defense spending.”

Translation: Nunn would cut health care to fund the war in Iran.

And that’s exactly what his Washington bosses are proposing. Trump said it’s “not possible” to fund Medicare, Medicaid, and child care costs while also paying for a war.

DCCC Spokesperson Katie Smith:
“As Iowans are struggling with the rising cost of gas, groceries, and fertilizer thanks to Zach Nunn’s war in Iran, Nunn wants to cut health care even more so he can send more taxpayer dollars overseas instead of to Iowans. Nunn broke his promises to the Iowa families here at home who desperately need relief from higher costs.”

Key points from the Des Moines Register:

  • Republican U.S. Rep. Zach Nunn…defended the Trump administration’s objectives in waging war with the Middle Eastern country.
  • Asked whether he would back war funding even if it meant cuts to health care spending, Nunn said “I don’t think the two are tied” but emphasized the need for defense spending.
  • In an Easter luncheon earlier this month, Trump had said it’s “not possible” for the federal government to fund Medicare, Medicaid and child care costs while the federal government focuses on military spending, suggesting those programs be left to the states to fund.
  • “I think we also need to say that we have invested heavily on the defense, not only of us and our troops and our allies, but we got to resupply that,” Nunn said.
