Chip Roy Opposes Bipartisan Coronavirus Bill and Calls It ‘Welfare’

Amid a national health crisis, Republicans and Democrats came together to get Americans the help they need – but not Congressman Chip Roy.

Tonight, Roy voted against a bipartisan bill to address the growing pandemic by providing no-cost coronavirus testing, paid sick leave and expanded unemployment insurance benefits to impacted Americans. Roy even called it “welfare.”

Despite the vast majority of House Republicans joining with Democrats in support of the emergency aid package, Congressman Roy voted to block the House legislation and its above measures along with increased federal funding for food security assistance and Medicaid programs.

“After deriding the bipartisan coronavirus bill as ‘welfare,’ Congressman Roy’s reckless vote shows he’s not taking the health and safety of his constituents seriously,” DCCC spokesman Avery Jaffe said. “While Democrats and Republicans came together to address this outbreak, Chip Roy is once again coming apart – pulling political stunts and proving that when Texans need him the most, he’ll always choose political games over their health and safety.”
