KEY VOTE ALERT: 40 Washington Republicans Vote Against Bipartisan Deal To Take On Coronavirus Pandemic

In the midst of a national health crisis, Republicans and Democrats came together to get Americans the help they need, but 40 Washington Republicans including the NRCC Chairman voted against a bipartisan deal to take on this growing pandemic by providing free coronavirus testing, paid sick leave, and expanded unemployment benefits to Americans impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the vast majority of Republicans joining with Democrats in support of this bipartisan emergency aid package, 40 Republicans voted to block the House legislation, including its food security assistance and increased federal funding for Medicaid.

“If people don’t get tested because they can’t afford it, we aren’t going to contain this outbreak. These reckless votes by Washington Republicans put Americans at risk,” said DCCC Spokesperson Robyn Patterson.  “It’s disheartening that so many Republicans in Washington would stand between the American people and badly needed relief and assistance during this crisis.”

Wall Street Journal:

House Democrats announced a deal with the Trump administration on legislation that would make coronavirus testing free and provide paid sick leave to many of those affected by the pandemic as it continues to spread across the country.

The measure would provide free coronavirus testing to anyone whose doctor says they need a test—and allow for as much as 14 days of paid sick leave and up to three months of paid family and medical leave. It would also provide more funding for state Medicaid programs, although less than what Democrats had proposed in their original legislation.
