The new Texas GOP chair is disgraced one-term Florida congressman Allen West — the cherry on top of a cycle of misery for Texas Republicans
With just 15 weeks to go until Election Day, Allen West has succeeded in his hostile takeover of the Republican Party of Texas.
Yes, that Allen West.
West, a disgraced one-term Florida congressman who couldn’t do much other than stir up conservatives into a frenzy and sucker them out of their money, has now done the same with Texas Republican leadership.
Now, with 106 days until Nov. 3, Texas Republicans have tossed their establishment-friendly chair in favor of a far-right fringe figure who has openly questioned the need for Texas Republicans to prioritize fundraising and voter registration.
As we noted in 2019, West is a disgraced military officer who lit $17 million on fire to lose his sole re-election campaign in 2012 and has a long, sordid history of extreme views.
Chairman West won’t be competent, but he’s who Texas Republicans deserve after a hapless election cycle marked by the embarrassing Bonnen tape, a leaked strategy memo, GOP racism in Fort Bend County, a belly-up super PAC, scandal-plagued chairs and calls from a top Texas Republican donor to kill protesters.
“Bravo, Texas Republicans. At one of the most crucial points in this election cycle, you’ve shown why Democrats are on offense across the Lone Star State in one fell swoop,” DCCC Spokesman Avery Jaffe said. “Disgraced one-term Florida congressman Allen West is the chairman Texas Republicans deserve after embracing an extreme agenda that’s leading the effort to repeal health care in a pandemic and pushing away the diverse communities that are putting seats across Texas in play.”
