DCCC Chairwoman Cheri Bustos released the following statement after Congressman Mark Meadows announced his plans to retire less than 12 hours after he voted to undermine the rule of law and oppose both articles of impeachment:
“Count ‘em: This is No. 25 just this year for House Republican retirements. Why are they running away as fast as they can? They do not want to face their voters as they take away their constituents’ health care, give tax cuts to special interests, and vote against lowering prescription drug costs. Congressman Meadows’ retirement is an important reminder that Republicans, particularly Republicans in leadership, don’t usually retire if they think they’ll find their way out of the minority anytime soon.”
Meadows’ retirement makes him the third North Carolina Republican to retire in the last two weeks, after both Congressman Holding and Walker announced they would not run in the newly redrawn districts. North Carolina’s filing period to run for Congress ends on Friday, December 20th.
