Duck, Duck, Recluse: Tom Kean Jr. Hides From Constituents

“Tom Kean Jr., Invisible Man, invisible office, invisible votes?”

On the campaign trail, Tom Kean Jr. made a name for himself by hiding from the press and from voters. Now, just weeks into serving in Congress, Kean is once again hiding – this time from his new constituents. As a result, NJ-07 voters are already rallying outside Kean’s office demanding answers and “accessibility.”

It is unsurprising Tom Kean Jr. is trying to dodge his constituents: his first few weeks in Congress have been chock-full of MAGA priorities, including abortion bans that would limit healthcare access and potentially imprison doctors.

DCCC spokesperson Tommy Garcia:
“In less than three weeks, Tom Kean Jr. has already shown New Jerseyans he will be a footsoldier in MAGA Republicans’ efforts to tank the U.S. economy, grant power to far-right extremists, ban abortion, and gut programs like Social Security and Medicare. The least he owes voters is answers and accessibility.”

  • “Accessibility,” was Merv Turner’s short answer as to his top concern with Kean.

  • Turner, of Scotch Plains, displayed a sign that simply stated, “Break the habit of a lifetime. Hold a town hall!”

  • Another sign declared: “Tom Kean Jr., Invisible Man, invisible office, invisible votes?”

  • Kean’s run for Congress was marked by fewer than expected public events.

  • Questions to the Bridgewater office on Jan. 18 were directed to Kean spokesman  in Washington,. D.C., Dan Sharfenberger, who did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

  • Chief among the concerns of the residents assembled were Kean’s anti-abortion stance, fears that Kean will join House Republicans targeting social security and Medicare in their effort to seek federal budget cut, and a lack of strong support for action to slow climate change.

  • For protester Mallory Salzman, Kean’s anti-abortion stance is of vital importance.

  • Her sign said, “NJ7 voters support a women’s right to choose. Why doesn’t Tom Kean Jr.?”

  • “As New Jersey senator, Kean voted against the right to contraception,” she said.

  • Shield said the main focus of the gathering was to remind Kean that he has an obligation to meet with his voters and hear their concerns.

  • “We don’t feel he represents our interests,” she said. “It’s important he knows that we will come after him.”
