Today, House Democrats passed a bipartisan bill to help combat the gun violence epidemic that continues to rip away loved ones and cut lives short. Despite rising crime and hundreds of mass shootings that have taken place this year alone, 193 House Republicans voted ‘NO’.
The legislation, now headed to President Biden’s desk for signature, will:
-
Invest in state-run crisis intervention programs and help states implement red flag programs which will keep guns out of the hands of people who pose a danger to themselves or others.
-
Help address the “boyfriend loophole” by barring some individuals convicted of domestic violence from having a gun.
-
Require gun sellers to register as Federally Licensed Firearm Dealers, which will then require dealers to administer background checks on individuals buying a firearm.
-
Call on states to enhance background checks on people 18-21 years old.
-
Boost mental health programs and school security funding.
When signed into law, this will be the largest step forward on broadly popular common sense gun reform in 30 years. The bill joins the long list of common sense reforms that House Democrats have passed in an effort to save lives and make our streets safer.
DCCC spokesperson Tommy Garcia:
“When given the opportunity to save lives and make our country safer, House Republicans cowered to the gun lobby and followed the orders of their spineless party bosses.”
