GOP operatives and pollsters see ‘scary’ data showing voters – including Republicans – souring on Trump’s broken promises
Recent reporting from the Washington Post reveals an emerging level of hopelessness among Republican campaign staff and pollsters as they see a growing body of electoral data revealing that the GOP base is souring on House Republicans in real time – highlighting how dim their prospects are in November.
This comes as Democratic primary voters are turning out in higher numbers than Republicans – by 4 million voters – which, in every midterm election since 2006, the party with the turnout edge has gone on to win the House.
One Iowa voter told the Washington Post that their last three votes for Trump were “the worst three mistakes I’ve ever made in my life.” The voter then said he would either sit out the midterms or vote for Democrats (in a state where the DCCC has targeted three Republican-held districts to flip).
With support for Republican congressional candidates already underwater among independent voters by 23 points, GOP strategists believe that up to 20 percent of historically reliably Republican voters are now turning their back on the party this year.
DCCC Spokesperson Viet Shelton “Republicans have so badly bungled their time in power that even their own base is turning on them – boosting Democrats’ offensive opportunities from Iowa to Ohio. Americans are pissed about how House Republicans lied to them about lower costs, and that anger is going to cost Republicans the majority.”
